Single Origin Coffee

Why You Should Try Single Origin Coffee

For those who are not coffee connoisseurs, the words single-origin coffee may be a little confusing, which is totally fair. Coffee itself has a long and rich history and different parts of the world have varied traditions, climates, soil and techniques which all come together to make a vast array of available flavours to try. As roasters, sourcing and selecting crops from across the globe and therefore tasting them is our daily job but a lot of this knowledge doesn’t usually make its way to the public. As we all know education is power, and the more you know about single-origin coffee, we know that you will love it.

What is It?

Single-origin coffee is exactly what it says in the name. A coffee from only a single farm or crop, in one country and is presented to the consumer for its distinct flavour.

Single-origin coffee beans contain an unaltered flavour profile, while a coffee blend combines various beans. Single origins tend to have an exotic taste, possibly bolder, fruitier or more aromatic.

While single-origin coffee contains generally a more exotic taste, blended coffee is balanced out with a range of different beans.

Single Origin vs BlendS

Coffee blends consist of two or more different crops of coffee mixed together. Coffee roasters create blends to combine and balance the unique characteristics of multiple beans and develop a profile that the business wants to consistently present to the public year-round.

Sometimes nothing beats a great single-origin coffee and there are some regions of the world that always present beautifully by themselves. While this may seem that blending is lesser, that’s not really the case. Both styles can end up with amazing coffees, they just come at it from different approaches.

The following are dot points that specify the unique differences between each coffee.

Single-origin:

  • Comprised of one region or farm.

  • One particular flavour profile from a specific region of the world.

  • Preferably served as a black cup to highlight the intricate flavour of the origin, as it can be lost when paired with milk.

  • Common characteristics may include: fruity, floral, spicy, bright, light-body, light mouthfeel.

Blends:

  • Comprised of multiple origins blended together.

  • Complimenting flavour profiles to provide a consistent and balanced cup.

  • Common to pair a bright, exotic coffee with a deeper noted bean.

  • Blends are commonly developed for espresso use.

  • Common characteristics include chocolate, caramel, nuts, honey, hints of fruit, full body, smooth mouthfeel.

Top Countries to Source Single Origin Coffee?

If single-origin coffee comes from only one region, it may be of interest to note which countries produce the best beans of deliciousness.

Some countries that produce amazing single-origin coffee include:

  • Costa Rica
Costa Rica has the ideal conditions and geography for high-quality arabica coffee. It sits in the Coffee Belt, which is a strip that runs parallel to the equator. Some of the loveliest Costa Rican coffees have been delicate with bright apple or stone fruit acidity.

  • Tanzania
Tanzania offers incredibly unique coffees. Crops can have a rustic and sweet taste with floral or berry notes and heavy bodies reminiscent of cocoa.

  • Ethiopia
Ethiopian coffee beans can vary wildly from region to region, but generally with a distinctly pronounced fresh and fruity tone. Also, depending on if they are washed or naturally processed, they can come with flavours of blueberries and strawberries, or with a bright citric acidity.

How Should One Enjoy Single Origin Coffee?

There are so many options when it comes to preparing coffee, and the tools that are on offer, so it’s natural to be quite confused on how to properly serve single-origin coffee.

A fantastic way to enjoy the unblended flavours of a single-origin coffee is to brew the coffee beans as an espresso shot or a filter coffee, without adding milk.
